Echocardiography

An ultrasound scan is a medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside of your body. It’s also known as sonography.

What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is a specialised ultrasound of the heart where ECG leads are placed on your skin and your heart is simultaneously assessed using ultrasound. Emerald Radiology has partnered with Cardionexus to provide echocardiogram and holter services. Cardionexus are experts in cardiac science who are supported by highly regarded Cardiologists. Our echocardiogram service is offered on a fortnightly basis.

How do I prepare for an echocardiogram?

You do not need to make any specific preparations prior to your echocardiography appointment. However, you should wear comfortable clothing that has no metal zippers, belts or buttons. You will need to remove any clothing and jewellery above the chest before the scan commences.

Generally, the scan itself will take approximately 30–40 minutes, however this may differ depending on the findings. After your procedure is complete, you will be able to resume all normal activities without any side effects from the scan.

What are the risks of an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound examination that is very safe to perform.

How do I get my results?

Your doctor will receive a written report on your test normally within 24 hours after the time of your examination. Urgent reports will be supplied as necessary. It is very important that you discuss the results with the doctor whom referred you so that they can explain what the results mean for you.

How much will my procedure cost?

We bulk bill many of our imaging services. X-RAY, OPG, CT, and DEXA services are bulk billed when Medicare compliant. Some gaps apply for our Ultrasound, Echocardiography, and Injection services. If you’re a concession card or pension card holder or under the age of 18 most services are bulk billed.
